No Ceiling (Channel A): B+
Born of Iranian parents in the Bronx, singer Haale Gafori might not have picked the best geopolitical moment to break out with this moody, casbah-rock hybrid. But she miscalculates little else in combining the winding muscularity of Led Zep’s Eastern excursions with the murky mysticism of like-minded efforts by Peter Gabriel, Sarah McLachlan and Loreena McKennitt. Anchored by a big, Bonzo-fied bottom with violins, desert percussion and her own reedy, muezzin-like voice skittering over the top, “No Ceiling” soars.
